So i was talking to a friend the other day. We somehow got onto the subject of Holland. Then i was asking why they have so many names for the one country. The lucky buggers have 3 names. See im annoyed at this, Australians have Australia as the country. England has the English. The Dutch, NOOO they have to be different, they have Holland and the Netherlands. Then i started asking why they weren’t called Hollandises’ or Netherlandians. No good answers were provided to me. The only answer being, ” They have a sauce named Hollandise, so they can’t be called that.” Thus i am dissapointed in the outcome of our disscussion, and had to drastically change topic, only to bring focus back on it again some 30mins later, over another Pint of English Ale. Still waiting for some good answers.

I couldn’t resist to smile while reading your entry. I never thought of it but you are right. I don’t know why you say ‘the Dutch’ and the country is called ‘The Netherlands’.
I searched on the internet for a reason why they call our country The Netherlands as well as Holland. This is what I found on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_netherlands#Naming_conventions
Enjoy
And here I thought I was just going crazy. That was very (still is) confusing for me ever since I learned english.
I feel better now…
I’m Dutch, and it has always partly confused me too! Especially ‘Dutch’
Holland is not an official name!
Holland is only a part of The Netherlands.
(as is explained in in wikipedia above)
Problem is, even Dutch people use ‘Holland’ to describe The Netherlands(even me, it’s shorter….!)
THing is, in Dutch it’s much easier!
I am ‘Nederlands’, come from the country ‘Nederland’, and speak ‘Nederlands’.
It’s the english side of things that makes it confusing, ha ha!!

Oh, I’m going to add you to my list of WA Blogs on my new Perth blog.
The Links page is actually not working at the moment, after I swapped themes, but hopefully I’ll have it back up this week….
Hope to give you some more incentive to keep blogging?
Oh, and if you know of any other good Perth/WA blogs I should know about, let me know!
I found Nathan J, and will add that new Manhunt blog, ha ha!
